David Hayes arranged to purchase Changingoftheguard in September from the Coolmore operation in Ireland and has imported him to Australia as a potential Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) horse.

Changingoftheguard is still entered for the 2009 Emirates Melbourne Cup at Flemington and Hayes has confirmed that the horse will compete this year in the race, after progressing well in his work since arriving. He did have to overcome a hoof abses that set him back in his work slightly but Hayes and rider Glen Boss both believe he is ready to go straight into the Cup without a lead-up run.
